Cub Injury Updates on Mills, Megill, Marisnick, Heyward originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
As the Cubs Prepared for Saturday night’s game against the Cardinals, coach David Ross provided a long list of updates on four players on the injured list.
On Sunday, swingman Alec Mills will begin rehab and reliever Trevor Megill will pitch BP live with Triple-A Iowa.
Mills landed on the IL last Sunday with a strain on her lower back, and Megill has been sidelined since April 30 with a strain on her right forearm.
Mills holds a 5.96 ERA in 12 appearances this season, but has been a Swiss Army knife out of the box, playing in a variety of roles.
Megill impressed before being sidelined, pitching two scoreless innings against Atlanta last month. The right-hander is one of the few throwers in the entire Cubs staff whose fastball speed is in the upper 90s.
Two other Cubs relievers have descended in recent days. The club placed Justin Steele (right hamstring tension) on IL Friday, and right-hander Jason Adam Endure a surgical act that night after dislocating his left ankle with Iowa.
Jake Marisnick, Jason Heyward Hamstring Updates
Ross has acknowledged that fourth outfielder Jake Marisnick will “at some point” need a rehab assignment when he returns from a right hamstring strain.
Marisnick took some tweaks on Friday and is “on good progress” as he comes back, Ross said. The 30-year-old landed on IL on May 11, injured two days earlier while chasing a ball against the Pirates.
Marisnick has provided a spark to the Cubs roster this season, beating .264 / .350 / .623 in 27 games while gaining more playing time for his performance.
Jason Heyward, on IL since Thursday with left hamstring strain, did some light agility work on Saturday which went well, according to Ross.
“J-Hey, depending on whether this stuff keeps bouncing pretty quickly, we can just activate it when it’s ready,” Ross added.
Heyward defeated .183 / .254 / .341 in 39 games.
