I checked into rehab to help stay sober

ALAN Carr’s ex-husband Paul Drayton has revealed to fans that he checked himself into rehab to help him stay sober after their split.

The TV comedian and the party planner released a joint statement on Friday morning confirming they were ending their three-year marriage.

Paul, 50, took to Instagram to follow up on his own statement, telling his fans he had “checked himself into rehab” to protect himself.

“It is with great sadness that I share the news that Alan and I have jointly decided to end our marriage,” he wrote alongside a snap of a sunset.

“This decision has been very difficult for us and we part with fond memories and continued love and friendship for each other as we part ways.

“As part of my own journey, I proactively checked into a rehabilitation center at the start of the new year to get the help and support I needed during this difficult time.”

Paul went on to explain in detail that it was “not an easy step to take”, but was aware that “it was the right step forward” for him and Alan, 45.

“These past two years have been difficult to say the least, as they have been for so many others,” he continued.

“I remain deeply committed to my journey of sobriety and strength. Thank you all for your kindness and support. Peace and love.”

The breakup comes as Paul faces jail for drunk driving after crashing his car following a public battle with alcoholism.

He is said to have exceeded the drink-driving limit four times when he backed into a police car – narrowly missing a mum with a pram.

A statement released by Alan’s rep read: “After 13 years as a couple and three years of marriage, Alan Carr and Paul Drayton would like to announce that they are separating.

“They have jointly and amicably made the difficult decision to divorce and separate. We ask that their privacy be respected at this sensitive time.”

The former couple dated for ten years before Paul proposed in 2016.

He surprised Alan by hiding the engagement ring in Alan’s dessert while on a romantic vacation in Indonesia.

Then in 2018, Alan’s best friend Adele was ordained so she could officiate at the comedian’s wedding.

The superstar singer serenaded Alan and Paul in her Los Angeles backyard during their first dance, then took the three of them to Las Vegas to watch singer Celine Dion perform.

But soon after their honeymoon in Mexico, Paul sought help for alcoholism and entered rehab.

The pandemic has also been tough on Paul, who sparked concerns when he posted a picture of himself with a black eye in August last year and told a fan ‘we had a bad argument’ .

He later revealed that he had caused his own black eye – by punching himself in the face.

Paul publicly apologized to Alan saying: “I feel very fragile right now and I would like to say that Alan didn’t hit me and never hit me and I’m devastated that he has to deal with this today.”

Alan also insisted he was not responsible for the injury. He said Paul had started drinking again – and was supporting her husband through difficult times.

Alan told The Sun: “While I was filming on location for the past few weeks, Paul fell off the wagon and started drinking again.

“When I returned from Wales Paul was covered in scratches and bruises from a drinking binge.

“We are now working together to get the help he needs to get better, which is our number one priority right now.”

Three days earlier, Paul had shared a photo of himself disheveled with vomit on his T-shirt.

Paul’s drunk driving incident happened in October.

The 50-year-old was arrested by police after he was seen “swerving from one side of the road to the other” – then backing into his vehicle.

He initially denied the charge, but later admitted guilt at Brighton Magistrates’ Court.

He was banned from driving and was placed on outright bail for his sentencing this month.

But he has been warned he is likely to serve jail time for the incident that happened three miles from the £2.7million pad he shares with Alan.

District Judge Amanda Kelly told him: “The starting point for this offense is a 12-week prison sentence and that was for someone with less alcohol and who did not hit a police car .

“I will order a pre-sentence report, but it is very likely that you will go to jail. You have endangered the public by driving in this condition.

“It is an absolute miracle that you are here today and did not kill or maim another member of the public. You are now disqualified from driving as of today.

“Be as honest and open as possible with probation, but custody is likely.”
