Kamran Akmal blasts PCB over Afridi’s shocking statement about Shaheen’s rehab | locust

Pakistani striker Kamran Akmal has thrown his support behind Shaheen Afridi after his former teammate slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and made a shocking revelation about Shaheen Afridi’s rehabilitation. Pace ace Shaheen had missed the entire edition of the Asian Cup due to a knee injury he suffered during the Sri Lanka series. Making headlines with his sensational claim, Afridi alleged that Shaheen flew to the United Kingdom (UK) for surgery at his own expense.

A day after Afridi’s big revelation sparked a massive debate in Pakistani cricket, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) headed by Ramiz Raja issued an official statement on Shaheen’s treatment. Launching an attack on Pakistan’s supreme cricket board on Saturday, Afridi’s former teammate Akmal urged PCB Chairman Raja to sack those responsible for the Shaheen fiasco. Sharing his views on his YouTube channel, Akmal defended Afridi and claimed that the PCB medical team wasted Shaheen’s time by forcing the pacemaker to travel with the team led by Babar Azam.

“The PCB Chairman must fire those responsible for the Shaheen Afridi fiasco. Did Ramiz Raja ask if Afridi’s treatment was under the supervision of the PCB? What about travel and accommodation? Shahid Afridi would never have made such a statement if the PCB had paid for all the expenses. He spoke because PCB did nothing. The medical team first lost 35 to 40 days by doing so travel with the team,” Akmal said.

The PCB on Thursday named pacemaker Shaheen in Pakistan’s all-star squad for the 2022 edition of the World Cup. However, speed dealer Shaheen will miss the seven-game T20I series between hosts Pakistan and England. Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Pakistan head coach Mohammad Wasim assured that the PCB are assessing Shaheen’s injury.

“Shaheen was forced to travel to London as the PCB medical team did not provide him with proper treatment. He did the right thing by leaving for London instead of wasting more time. If he had made that decision a little earlier he would have been playing the series at home against England,” said Akmal who played 58 T20Is for Pakistan.

Akmal observed that Afridi was cleared to return to training just two days after the star point guard arrived in London. Speaking more about the PCB’s ‘incompetent’ medical staff, Akmal felt the cricket board was controlling the damage by sending Fakhar Zaman to London for rehabilitation.

“Just two days after reaching London he was able to resume training. While the PCB medical team had his knee bandaged when he was at the ICC Academy. This shows how incompetent the medical staff are. The council says they arranged the doctors, but Shahid Afridi said he was the one who made the arrangements. The PCB is just trying to limit the damage by sending Fakhar Zaman to London for his rehab,” he added.
