Lakers ‘hope’ Trevor Ariza can train in G League while in rehab

As Trevor Ariza continues to move forward on a comeback, the Lakers still don’t have a specific timeline for when it might be. Ahead of Thursday’s game against the Grizzlies, head coach Frank Vogel gave the latest update on the veteran forward, who participated in training with the team during a scrum earlier in the week. .

“Like I said, he trained the other day,” Vogel said. “He got into live action for the first time. We hope he will potentially train with the [the South Bay Lakers] next week on a day we may not be practicing, if it is necessary so that he can get more live work. So we try to get [him] sped up as quickly as possible, but no real update on the exact timeline. “

The Lakers’ veteran squad means the amount of training the team has is limited over the season (they’ve only had eight since games started). Add to that the general non-stop nature of an NBA schedule, and the main opportunities Ariza has had to do on the field have been before games, which he continued to do in Memphis on Thursday.

In that sense, it’s understandable that the Lakers send Ariza to the G League, where training is much more involved and active, as is the nature of having a younger and developing squad. The Lakers used a similar game plan when Wayne Ellington was returning from injury, making a brief pitstop in the G League to practice.

The encouraging sign, however, is that Ariza hasn’t experienced a setback and continues to make progress. All injuries are certainly treated differently, but Ellington was able to make his debut days after training with the South Bay Lakers. While it’s still unclear where Ariza is in her timeline, a stop in the G League for active training is another milestone and one step closer to her season debut in the purple and gold.
