New database aims to locate drug addiction in Pueblo

PUEBLO – New interactive dashboard available at Pueblo County Health Department website with data that breaks down drug addiction in Pueblo.

“The individual partners were like – hey, there are issues with substance use and substance treatment, but we didn’t really have the full picture!” said Anne Hill, a public health epidemiologist in Pueblo.

The dashboard was made possible through a “selective” grant from the United States Department of Justice. Hill says the team was “thrilled” when they heard the news and hopes the constantly updated information will be of use to local organizations fighting drug issues across town.

“It can help… tell us where we need to focus our efforts!” If that sounds like an addiction trend in that direction, it gives us an opportunity to cut it before it hits a certain point, ”said Ashley Parsons, a recovering addict who knows how to lead Harm Reduction Outreach Peer Education and Support (HOPES).

Parsons says his addiction spiral started in the waiting room of a doctor’s office.

“My addiction went from a legal prescription in the office to finding it on the street, then one day it wasn’t, so I went to Heroine’s.”

As of March 2021, Parsons has been off drugs for two years and says she wanted to use her story to help others.

“I would take out the coolers along the transit routes and put clean supplies there for people, and replenish them once a week. Now … I do public speeches, obviously I work with people to help them get them into rehab!

Parsons wants to remind everyone in Pueblo that empathy is one of the best tools in the fight against drug addiction.

“Someone’s mother or father is at home crying every night for this loved one. Are you really that cruel that they don’t deserve love, food aid? Instead of passing judgment. Offer help. “

There are several ways people can get help in Pueblo. Parsons says HOPE is available to everyone. Other resources include:
