A new survey suggests that nearly one in five veterans living in Virginia believe the year of COVID was the most difficult year of their life without a fight, a rate in line with national findings.

The VeteranAddiction.org survey also found that about one in seven Veterans have turned to alcohol more in an effort to get through the pandemic.

“For already vulnerable veterans, the social disruption caused by the pandemic has exacerbated many pre-existing concerns,” the organization noted. “Those who go through mental health issues are also at significant risk of developing or relapsing into an addiction disorder. “

The survey found that 19% of Virginia veterans said the year of COVID was their most stressful, a figure lower than three surrounding states (Maryland at 38%, North Carolina at 26% and Tennessee at 25%. ) but higher than that of the West. Virginia (14%). Nationally, the rate was 20 percent.

Those who face challenges are encouraged to seek help.

“There are many dedicated online resources. for veterans in particular, by providing helpful coping mechanisms, ”said Brittney Morse, substance abuse counselor. “Interpersonal social and family relationships are also important – if the person has difficulty reaching out, these connections can help them point to expert medical advice.”

Nationally, the highest percentage of veterans who said last year was the hardest were in Oregon (43%), Arizona (38%), Wyoming (33%) and Delaware (31%). States with the lowest rates included Illinois and Missouri (7%), Nevada (8%), and Washington and Alabama (9%).

Broken down by gender, 21% of male veterans said the COVID era was the most difficult fight-free period of their lives, while 18% of female veterans said so.
