Quincy Williams set to bring Jets back after quick rehabilitation

When Quincy Williams injured his left ankle in the Jets’ loss to the Bengals last month and the cart was brought onto the field to bring him into the locker room, it looked like he might be out for the season.

The linebacker, however, will play against the Packers on Sunday in Green Bay.

“When he got his injury, it looked, at least from my perspective, really bad,” Jets head coach Robert Saleh said Friday. “We dodged a bullet, he dodged a bullet. We thought it was going to be a lot worse, but I owe him wood and credit too, he worked hard to try to come back. I hope he gets the chance to go play some games.”

Williams, who trained hard Friday for the second day in a row, said he was eager to get back on the court.

“Yeah, it looked bad and it hurt, but when we came back and took the x-rays [there was no broken bone] and they came up with a good plan for me,” Williams said. “I’m delighted to be back with my teammates to celebrate and have fun.”

The only player on the Jets’ injury report who won’t play Sunday is rookie defensive lineman Jermaine Johnson, who injured his ankle last week.

“He will be reassessed daily, so we will see where he is next week,” Saleh said.

Saleh said the rotation of running backs, with rookie Breece Hall and second-year running back Michael Carter, is fluid, making it look like the plan is to play hot hand. Hall finished with 197 all-purpose yards against the Dolphins on Sunday.

“It never goes as planned,” Saleh said. “You try to keep the balance between the two, so they have – in a 17-game season – longevity. But when you come into the game and one of them comes up with the hot hand and that “He just sees it a certain way, you just roll with it. You don’t think one guy is going to have the ball more than another.

Hall has 56 carries for 275 yards and two touchdowns and Carter has 47 carries for 158 yards and two touchdowns.

“The cool thing about our system is that if Michael gets hot, he’ll roll [and] if Breece gets hot, he rolls,’ Saleh said.

Saleh, who was asked if he was able to squeeze something out of the work the Giants defense, guided by veteran coordinator Wink Martindale, did last week against the Packers, including shutting down Green Bay in second period, said: “I have so much respect for Wink and what he does. His pressure system, I would love to sit down with him in the offseason and see if we can marry the two systems in one one way or another.

“He did a really good job with his game plan and got Aaron [Rodgers] on site and all that. So much respect for them. They did a great job.”
