Unpaid drug debt leads to weekend shootout, no one gets hurt
On 09/18/21 at approximately 12:45 am, the SPD responded to a shooting in Block 7000 of N Division St. Victims said they were sitting in their vehicle when a man shot them.
Officers contacted the victims who said they used to struggle with drug addiction but were able to clean up. The person who shot them was an acquaintance from their previous life to whom they still owed money. The victims accidentally ran into the suspect while shopping. The victims tried to avoid contact, but the suspect chased them in his vehicle before firing at least one shot, hitting the victims’ vehicle. Officers observed a bullet hole in the car and were able to recover part of the bullet. A probable cause has been established to arrest the suspect for a litany of crimes.
The suspect has been identified as Damian Zowal, 28.
SPD agents went to Zowal’s residence, located in northern Spokane County, and observed him outside the house. When officers called Zowal, informing him that he was under arrest, he retreated into the house.
Based on the seriousness of the criminal charges and the danger Zowal posed to the community and agents, additional SPD resources were used. Members of the SWAT team on duty as well as a K-9 SPD unit responded to the location. SWAT officers arrived with a Bearcat (armored vehicle) and about three minutes later Zowal surrendered and was taken into custody without incident.
Zowal has ten felony convictions including burglary 1st degree and theft of a gun.
Zowal has been charged with five crimes related to this incident: two counts of assault 1st degree, one count of driving by shooting, one count of illegal possession of a firearm (criminal in possession) and one count of mischief 2sd degree (bullet damage to vehicle). At the time of writing, Zowal remains in the custody of a bond of $ 75,000.
